So I work in a dental office as an assistant. Assistants basically do most of the grunt work and get paid the least but that's not the main focus. When I was first signed on, I was promised a raise (21 -> 22/hr)after 3 months. 6 months later, haven't seen a nickel because “they want to see improvement in my performance and generally don't give any raises prior to seeing an entire year.”
Since that delightful review, I've stopped going above and beyond and just doing the bare minimum. I've never been happier. Before, they used to always ask me 1 day in advance if I could come in friday/saturday (I usually don't work those days as dentistry is usually 4 days a week) and I'd say yes even though I need more time to study but yknow “I didn't want them to stress over not having an assistant.” I'm also the youngest staff by far and don't have any kids so I'm usually more available.
Yesterday, my manager pulled me into her office and asked why I was only working 1 sat (everyone has to work at least 1 sat). I said I was busy and was unavailable “unfortunately.” She said she needed me to come in more sats because there were 5 sats in April. I ,again, reiterated that I was busy.
Her: “thelastsubject123, what do you want me to do then? We need an assistant on Saturday and all the ones are unavailable so I need you to come in more Saturdays”
Me: “I'm very sorry but like I've said, I'm unavailable.”
Her:” Well then what do you want me to do? Should I hire another assistant? This is a big problem. When we hired you, we told you we expected you in on some Saturdays.”
Me: ” I agree, when I agreed to work here, we agreed on a lot of things but things change don't they. Also, I've already agreed to one Saturday.”
Her: ” Well thelastsubject123, my hands are tied here. Tell me how I can solve this issue then.”
Me:” Manager, I'm not in the right position to discuss how you should manage the office. I have complete faith you'll figure this out.” and I promptly left because she for some reason thought this conversation was best in the middle of treating a patient.
I loved her thinly veiled threat of firing me because I know for a fact they've been trying to look for an extra assistant since we're under staffed. They were looking for 2 months but couldn't find anyone so they gave up so no, I'm not the slightest bit scared. If you're gonna treat your staff like shit, don't be surprised when we don't help you out lmao
