Direct report promoted to my level and they still want me to be their manager?

One of my direct reports is being promoted and she truly does 100% deserve it and I’m truly happy for her. This promotion brings her to the same title and presumably same pay as me. I met with my boss today to discuss transition of her management formally and he said he didn’t understand and that I would still be her manager. I expressed discomfort with this because I don’t think it’s appropriate for someone with the same title on the same team to report to me. He countered with how this sometimes happens with Managing Directors. Well…suffice it to say I am nowhere near a Managing Director in pay or title. After much back and forth I told him that promotions come with added responsibility, and if I’m still ultimately accountable for her work then that is additional responsibility for me as well with no promotion, rise in pay,…

Even fast food has Team Leads.

Has this happened to anyone else? Did you have to quit or did you manage to squeeze yourself a promotion out of it?
