Dismissed for “Gross Misconduct”

So for context I work(ed) at a Digital Marketing Agency as a full stack developer. Our company was touped over after merging with a larger company. I was presented with a new contract to which they stated: “You may not, whether during or outside of hours of work, undertake any work or activity, whether paid or unpaid, which is competitive or otherwise conflicts with the Employer's business or interests.” My friend, who owns a Business Consulting firm, but is not tech-savvy in the slightest asks me technical questions when it comes to building a website for himself. I.e “which plugins are good for forms on WordPress” or “what hosting should I use”. Those sorts of questions. My former boss knew this and knew I helped out but after my new contract comes in, I am suspended with pay due to “gross misconduct” going against this part of the contract. Today…

Today I have been dismissed for “working with/for a competitor whilst currently employed at (Company Name)” and am wondering if this is unfair dismissal or whether I can contest it.
