This is a question I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
Today my Mom found out that she basically got a demotion. She’s been an absolute super star at her workplace, she brought the team together, facilitated meetings so they could meet their goals, and she even won a hefty grant for her department. She found out today (a day before they start their fiscal year) that she’s getting moved to a much less prestigious position with more work and the same pay. She can’t even quit because she works in a niche industry and breaking her contract (standard in the industry) would make her certification null and void in the state we live in.
I can tell this was strategically done without the two week notice (in which she could have quit without penalty) so my mom wouldn’t have the option to search for other jobs or hand in her resignation.
I’ve been in similar situations myself, as a new grad I went to a big Corporation and was pushed into the deep end by my manager, despite that I worked very hard and was able to complete a key technology they’re using across clients now. Later that same manger (after very poorly guiding me through 6 months of work, and making me work over 55 hour weeks) didn’t even bother to submit a review, which resulted me in being a step away from being fired. (Luckily since then I got moved to another project and my new manager is awesome.)
Do bad managers like this get what’s coming to them? Or do they get tot skate through life and the rest of us just pick up the pieces?
