Do I have any leverage against my employer?

I work for a bank which I’ll keep anonymous. I’m a fairly new employee and believe it or not I enjoy where I’m working compared to previous employers. However, there is one thing that is truly bothering me. We’re only given 30 minute breaks, and because I’m the only full time employee on the transaction line I almost never get to take a real break. Every time I “take my break” there’s no one else to work the transaction line besides the asst. manager who constantly instructs me to stay in the building in case he needs me to hop back on and help, which happens often. I’ll be called out from the back and have to resume working, even though I’m on my legal break and “clocked out”. Obviously this causes complications such as on days when I don’t have lunch to pack at home and I find myself…

I’ll be called out from the back and have to resume working, even though I’m on my legal break and “clocked out”.

Obviously this causes complications such as on days when I don’t have lunch to pack at home and I find myself starving for lunch and not eating until dinner, or recently when I was in the bathroom on my break and my asst. manager came knocking on the door telling me I had to come out immediately and help the line.

What sucks is besides this one fault, I actually like my coworkers (besides the asst. manager). I’ve also been informed that I will be receiving a promotion which includes a location transfer. I’m currently underemployed and only in this position to “get my feet wet”. However, I may have to stick it out in my current position for a few more months. My real manager is a saint, but is often absent bc they manage multiple locations.

I don’t want to quit, but am I in a position where I can contact HR on this issue and get approval to hire an additional employee? Currently my branch isn’t approved for another employee…. Probably due to corporate greed, but who knows.

Any advice helps. Thanks!
