I've been in all kinds of jobs and nothing grates my work ethic faster than manipulative communication.
It's not uncommon in hospitality to have shifts that have vague end times, to an extent I can understand and even forgive the occasional night being longer than expected as that's the nature of the beast.
It shouldn't be every single rostered shift though.
What will guarantee me NOT staying back is shitty communication and planning, managers know hours ahead if it's gonna be a long night, so there's no excuse to ask 5 minute's before the previously promised finish time that we stay back.
Also, it doesn't matter if I have plans or not, it doesn't matter what my plans are, you don't get to make the value judgement on where my time should be spent.
If I wanna sit on my fat ass and play video games or if half a dozen of my friends have made time for DnD session together, you don't get to ask much less make remarks about it.
I owe you nothing but my work while I am I rostered to work.
9/10 times I would be happy to stay if asked with at least 1 1/2hrs notices and in an honest way. Ie “Can you stay back tonight?” instead of 'do you have plans?'.
The best are the managers that take genuine, Personal offence to being told no and can't fatham anything being more important than this casual job.
I don't care how little life you have outside running someone else's business, this doesnt even pay my bills and you think I should care about you firing me? Adorable, like actually cute.
