does probationary period begin before first shift or upon accepting position?

I did not feel comfortable working for this company any longer and said that I am turning down the position. They are now demanding I pay for the drug test and the course. In the contract I signed there was a 90 day probationary period in which I can quit without notice or justification just as they can terminate my employment without notice or give cause. Does my employment begin at moment I sign contract or at first shift.
