Don't lie to me.
Background:
I worked for a lighting company as a service Tech. The company was struggling, and cut our department in half. Our service manager was an ass, (let's call him J)he would give us too many service calls we would work from 7am to 10pm. At first I didn't mind the OT. Then two weeks later they cut our department in half again. Only 4 vans for the entire DFW area and no helpers. It really sucked when you had to hang a 100lb to 300lb Chandelier 35' to 40' high and no help to set up a 120lb 20' ladder. I would call J for help and he would tell me he was busy and to call one of the other techs to help. This went on for 2 months, techs calling for help or me calling for help. We were getting burned out.
The straw that broke the camel's back.
That day I had very easy service calls, rushed through them as fast as I could so I could go home at a decent hour instead of working all night. I am on my last call and it only took 30 minutes. I write out my report and start the drive back to the shop when my J calls. I pick up and J pleads with me to help one of the service techs (who I'll call V) with a house change out. I told him no and explained I haven't been home at a decent hour and am looking forward to spending time with my daughter. J begs and said the V has been there since Noon he has about an hour left and if I help we could both be home at a decent hour. I grumbled and agreed to help, but only did it for V.
Well surprise…I get there and find out the V has just arrived 5 minutes before I did. I am beyond pisst so I called J and chewed him out for lying to me, and he hung up. I tried calling the J back but no answer. I get out of my van, grab my tools, and I walk inside. As I am looking around at all the light fixtures, how big this house is, and what we have to change out. I looked at the time it was almost 6pm. I figured I won't be home till 11pm. I said “Screw it”. I told V I needed to make a call.
I headed out to my van and called my J and still no answer. I left a message telling him I quit. I jumped in the van and started grabbing all my tools. Called my wife, told her to come pick me up. As I am waiting for my wife, J calls and starts begging me not to quit. I hung up the phone, tossed the company phone and the van keys inside the van and locked up the van. Wife picks me up and head to the shop to get my vehicle. Got home and fell asleep with my cellphone on silent.
Next day I woke up with weight lifted off my shoulders. So I decided to call one our delivery drivers about 1pm. He tells me after I quit “V” quit as well. Leaving both company vans there on the job site. J drove out with his girlfriend, but unfortunately both vans had been locked with the keys inside. Joe had to make 3 trips to the shop. 1 trip for the spare keys and 2 trips to get the vans back to the shop. J didn't get home till 3am, and is doing the house change out by himself, since the other two techs called in.
Side Note: Company went bankrupt a month later. Dodge a bullet.
