Don’t make plans after work

Forgive any errors, as this is my first post. Years ago I worked as a server in a family owned restaurant. The parents were getting pretty old by the time I came along so their four adult children ran the place. The parents had spent their lives running this restaurant so they had a hard time handing over the reins and were ALWAYS there, I guess they didn't have much of a social life or hobbies outside this restaurant. The whole family were arrogant and condescending, and didn't treat their staff very well; We were told that our 5% tip out at the end of every shift was our “payment for the privilege of working there”.

We would work 10 hour shifts with one half hour lunch break, and this place was BUSY! The meeker staff members were terrified of getting in trouble and would often be in tears at some point during their shift. I had the chef yell and shake his finger in my face for some small perceived infraction. Another time I was written up for not attending a staff meeting on my scheduled day off, there are so many stories I could tell about my time working there.

Anyhow, one day, I had to get my daughter to an appointment so, at the start of my shift I had cleared with the front of house manager (the son) that I could leave directly at the end of my shift and not take any more tables at a certain point to be sure I got out in time, I must have caught him on a good day because he agreed.

Nearing towards the end of the day, the mom came to me and said she had sat a table in my section. I let her know that I couldn't take the table as I had plans after work. She got red in the face and angrily told me that I shouldn't be making plans after work! That was the beginning of the end for me there, it's bad enough to be treated so poorly at work and seeing my lovely co-workers cry, I certainly wasn't going to let my boss dictate my life outside of work.
