For years I was underpaid and eventually went into sales (with a journalism degree).
The radio station that I used to work for just offered me a fill-in position, and I loved that work. But. I had to decline and stated that I would fill-in for 25% more than they offered. They accepted immediately.
NEVER ACCEPT THE INITIAL OFFER
I'm going back to work for them for more than double what I was being paid when I quit 7 years ago.
The people that are still there from when I quit are making about 10 to 20 percent more than when I left….poor bastards
