This took place years ago when I was a young 23yo chef. I was working for a third party company as a salary private chef at a fraternity while also working as a waiter part time for a different place. It was a Monday to Friday 9-5 job but part of my contract included some unspecified Saturdays. A side note being I was a full time server at my other job making more money but cut down to part time to get more specificly into my field with my culinary degree.
Well about a month or two into this new job there was a Saturday I needed to work, homecoming/ alumni weekend. This would have been fine except the fraternity didn't inform me and my co-chef till Tuesday the week of. Luckily the new regional was there and told me it would be his first event so I don't need to call off from my other job and he would be happy to cover for me. I'm thinking great! He can cover and I'll get there as soon as I'm off from serving it'll all work out. I was wrong. The owner of the company caught wind and calls me on my cell even tho we've never spoke before. He began to berate me how I'm on contract to work weekends and the job he's providing is more important than my serving job. How if I'm not there he won't pay me during the school holidays that I had off. My contract did state I would have to pay back holiday pay if I were to breach but at that point I hadn't had any holiday pay yet. I let him rant off his speel. I calmly but sternly responded by saying “So if I'm not here Saturday you'll be docking $4500 from my salary?” Lucky for him my tone was clear because I wouldn't have shown up again ever. He was silent for few seconds while it clicked and he said what I worked out with the regional will be fine. I told him I'll be there as soon as I can and I never spoke with the man again.
