Back in my electrician days, I had been working for a union contractor for over a year. I had my wedding planned out, everyone at work knew about it, even invited my foreman. My wedding was going to be on a Saturday, and I was planning on taking off the Friday before and also the whole week after for my honeymoon. The day before my wedding, everyone knew there was going to be a ROF layoff. I asked my cousin (general foreman) and my foreman (invited and actually went to wedding) if I had anything to worry about. If a layoff was coming, I’d take my tools home, go sign the books, and probably have a job when I got back home from Honeymoon. I’d have no hurt feelings. Lay offs, while disappointing, come with job. They all tell me I have nothing to worry about.
I get back from Honeymoon, my entire crew has been redistributed, my foreman is assigned to another project, and my cousin general foreman is caught by surprise when I show him a layoff slip dated the day before my wedding.Everyone that had been laid off was already back to work for other contractors. I had to wait another 2 weeks after my honeymoon for another job to pop up.
Fast forward 1.5 years later, and I return to work for the same contractor. They are happy to have me back. Behind the scenes, I start talking to a company that performs electrical testing and maintenance. Different type of work that requires less labor and more knowledge. Once I get offer letter, I take all my tools home, and never go back. I get calls from multiple people in the company, some from union hall guys, even my cousin asking ‘what’s wrong?’ ‘Are you planning on coming back?’ No answer, just constant ghosting. They left me hanging after my wedding, I leave them hanging with no notice.
