My sister is a National Forest Firefighter in the US. She lives in Murray, KY but mostly deploys to California & Oregon for work.
She deploys for 2-4 weeks at a time. Recently, her electric provider, Murray Electric, turned off her electric because the payment she made on their archaic website did not go through.
They provided no email indicating that she needed to pay again, and the website reflected no need for payment.
Her latest deployment was from August 12th until today August 29th. She came home today to find a paper notice on her door that only gave her until August 15th to make the payment, otherwise her electric would be shut off. This means they posted it on August 13th, only giving her 48 hours to react…had she been home!!
When she came inside, the electric was turned off, and all of her refrigerator food was spoiled. Her apartment smells putrid, and some of her neighbors reported her. In her current job, she barely makes a living wage sadly, and this has been devastating to her.
I know this is not employer-related, but this corporation’s tactics seem so evil and unnecessary.
1) What can she do to remedy this issue?
2) Can she get an compensation from Murray Electric Co?
3) Were their tactics legal?
