Employer canceled my health insurance while on maternity leave

I get a call from my manager while I was still in the hospital with my baby in the NICU saying that my insurance will be canceled on the 30th. She called me on the 20th, so a ten day notice. I received a letter from my insurance provider saying the reasoning was because I reduced my hours, but I only did that because my doctor advised me to. Nothing about my insurance being canceled or anything was discussed prior. There was no contact or anything in writing that I signed about my reduced hours. The only time I was told about this was when she called me on the 20th. I was obviously in shock (and sleep deprived from just having a baby), so I didn't ask any questions, but she also didnt give me time to talk because she just said “Have a good day” and hung up (didnt even ask how my baby was or how I was doing). I'm pretty sure I am a protected employee, because I was on maternity leave and I also had a doctor's note for my reduced hours. Am I wrong? Can someone let me know if this was legal or not?
