Employer Changes benefits without Notice

My father works as a field Service technician at an IT company in Canada. They have contracts with banks and send him in to fix hardware issue at various sites across the metro area. Recently he started experiencing headaches. After a trip to ER and a CT Scan later, they found a golf ball sized tumor in his frontal lobe.

He had to go into brain surgery the next day, which as you can imagine is quite serious. They cut open your skull, scrape out the tumor, etc. Thankfully the tumor ended up being benign.

The doctor told my father that he would need several weeks to months of rest. He may experience seizures and other neurological side effects. Not condusive to a job that requires driving across the city.

When he went to apply for short term disabilty his employer advised him that they had changed insurance providers and short term disability was no longer covered for this above the age of 65 ( he is 65) as it previously was.

He was not advised of this change in any way.

Do any redditors out there have any advice, is there legal recourse he can take?

Thanks!
