Employer is charging me $1000 to leave.

I’m a teacher and I signed a contract for the upcoming school year. Another opportunity at a different popped up (20% raise, more time off, etc). My employer is deducting $1000 from my paycheck for breaking contract. Can they really garnish my wages like this? Doesn’t seem legal but it probably is 🇺🇸
