Hello everybody! I’ve gotten myself into quite the pickle and I feel like I’m suffocating because I don’t know what to do so please help if you can. I am 21yo and do not have much experience with this so please forgive me if my questions or choices seem dumb. Sorry if this is the wrong sub: if it is, please guide me to the right sub. Thank you in advance
For context: half a year ago, I quit my former job due to a toxic environment and was desperately in search for another job that would take a newly grad with no applicable certificates. At the time, I thought I lucked out because the job that I applied to (that I work at now) was not only willing to hire me without the certificate but they were also willing to fully reimburse the tuition needed to get those certificates! So I happily accepted the job where I would work part-time for 3 days a week. I then ran into personal issues that required my attention and so delayed my certifications for a little over 3 months. After I took care of those matters, I decided to finally enroll for the classes needed for my certification (in addition to 2 other in person summer college courses that I needed separately for graduate school). As a result, I had to change my work schedule to accommodate these classes and was only working there once a week for the 2 months duration of classes. After my classes ended, I told my manager that I would be able to return to my original 3 day work schedule but was told to only come in for 2 out of the 3 days. In addition, I was told that I had to either change from W2 to 1099 or “my position would no longer exist”… As my tuition reimbursement was still on the line, I decided to bite my tongue and accept the change despite not knowing much about 1099 (which I had mentioned to her and feel she is taking advantage of) because I needed the money. After the change to 1099, I wasn’t given any notification about what changes would be made and was randomly given a physical check by a coworker. Aside from this random check passed onto me, I haven’t received payment for a month now. During the discussion in which she mentioned switching to 1099, she had also decided to flip the switch and say that I would not receive my reimbursement all at once due to my “unstable schedule” – when I had already begun to work my “normal schedule” minus the 1 day she told me not to work and instead would receive them in increments (that I later learned would span for the next year…) I guess my question is what can I do to benefit from this unwarranted switch to 1099 and given my situation, what can I do to get my reimbursement all at once as initially promised? Thank you so much if you’ve made it this far. I really appreciate it because I’ve been stressing about this for a really long time and do not know who to go for guidance as my parents are immigrants and my coworkers do not talk to me due to cultural and generational differences. Thank you again, I would appreciate any and all help!
