Employer wants me to switch from part-time to Independent Contractor— need advice

Hi all. I’m not sure if this is the most appropriate sub to post this in, but I’ve seen a lot of helpful advice here. I’ve been a long-time lurker (I was actually inspired to quit my full-time job for my current job to reduce stress and spend more time with my daughter) so I thought I’d see what you all have to say. I’m currently a part-time copywriter and editor for a company based in NYC (I live in Colorado if it matters). The work isn’t stressful. It’s not the most intellectually challenging thing I’ve ever done, but it is interesting and I do enjoy it well enough.

It’s also the most money per hour I’ve ever made and it allows me the flexibility to stay home with our toddler without spending money on daycare.

Recently, my boss told me that he would need to move me to an IC payment model at the beginning of 2023 for “budget reasons.” I admit I’m not the most savvy person when it comes to things like that, but this request instantly gave me red flags. When I pushed back and told him that this would require a lot of extra time on my end to calculate and pay my own taxes, he brushed it off and assured me that it wasn’t that difficult. I don’t appreciate that this feels more like a demand than a request, and that this only helps him without any benefit for me. But, I also don’t know whether I can say no without risking my job. I don’t think he would fire me for this, but I think it’s likely that he could start looking for a reason or giving me fewer assignments. If I’m being a hassle, why keep me around?

On the other hand, jobs like this are hard to come by and I love the lifestyle I’ve been able to achieve by working here. I can spend time with my daughter and take her to appointments/play dates/whatever else we need, and I have time to run errands during the day so we can enjoy time with my husband at night when he gets home.

What should I do? Am I making too big a deal out of this? Thank you in advance to all who read and respond!
