Hey all,
So over the past 3 years I've been working IT at a small locally owned business. Recently my dad's health has declined and we aren't sure how much longer he's got, and the stress of work, chores, family, friends, and relationships has got me feeling burnt out. I went to the owner and told him how I felt and what I was going through, and asked if I could drop down to part time, 4 days a week, to give me a little breathing room.
I told them I'd come in on that day if they were busy, had someone off for vacation, whatever they needed. I agreed to take a pay cut, at least 1/5 of what I make, but I'd have let them take more. Said they could take my benefits too, healthcare and all. But that didn't work for them. Said they didn't want to set a precedent for people working part time.
Time passed, still felt the same, so I came back to them yesterday and told them nothing's changed and that I'm leaving if they can't work with me. They left to talk it over and later one of them came by and said “so when are you telling everyone you're leaving?”
From the first moment I spoke with them they had already planned my replacement from within the company. They straight up don't care. It's just infuriating to me the lack of empathy people have, and how they like to come off as these great people that care about others, when they couldn't give a single fuck.
