Antiwork

Employers expect loyalty and hard work from employees but don’t show any incentive to stay.

I'm typing this on my phone so I apologise for poor formatting. I work in a takeaway/restaurant business in Ireland. The restaurant part closed due to the pandemic and never reopened, though the takeaway part has been busier than ever before over the past 2 years. I have worked here for 4 years, and besides the 2 months we were closed, I worked the whole way through the pandemic, while finishing my college degree. We are down to a literal skeleton crew. There is just about enough people to keep the place open and we are all worked to the bone at this stage. I have worked here for 4 years, and besides the 2 months we were closed, I worked the whole way through the pandemic, while finishing my college degree. We are down to a literal skeleton crew. There is just about enough people to keep the place open and we are all worked to the bone at this stage.

There is no praise for the work that we do, we never hear anything like “good job”, “you worked great today”, nothing. In the past 4 years that I have worked here my wages have increased a measly €2.45, in 4 whole years. We also don't get bonuses or anything like that at the end of the year. On bank Holidays we get double pay. That's it.

How do employers expect people to be grateful for €12 an hour for such demeaning work? It's barely enough to make ends meet at the end of the week.

Pay staff what they're worth!
