Employers interview too damn many people (rant)

I am in a somewhat niche field which requires specialized experience using certain software. I have been unemployed for about 3 months now and have applied to probably 100 or so jobs, and have had about a dozen interviews. I don't have a problem with employers being picky. I get that they want “the best candidate”, but please stop interviewing 8-10 people for one position. I'd seriously rather not waste my time with an interview where I just reiterate what's on my resume and describe a few projects. You should be able to narrow down your choices more before asking people to travel to your office. Most of these jobs are with local governments, which means I have to drive all over to do these interviews. I don't get paid for any of that. Gas in California is over $6 a gallon now in most places.
