Even giving a raise will not help you

So the company I was working in was my first office job and first job in my field in new country (I am eastern EU and move to western EU country in 2019). Lucky for my in my field working language is english so I got the job without significant skills in language of the country. So start from the beginning…

I started working there in 2019, shortly before pandemic hit. What is important is that my company is keeping all employees wages confidential and we officially are not allow to talk about them. At entry interview I asked for little bit lower salary for this position, as it was very first job in office and I just wanted to grab some job in the field in this country to have a start point. Additionally, my position had a lot of admin responsibilities so I thought that it is suitable. And I got the job. And that was rocky road from the start. I had no clue what I suppose to do and there was no one to actually explain it to me, show me how to do certain stuffs and so one. When I asked, I was told that everyone have to just figure it out. You can imagine that there was few hiccups because of it that made me only more pissed. Same, my boss was kind of the guy that was giving you some tasks, not explaining how he expect it to be done, and then hell was breaking loose 'cause you practically did not manage to read his thoughts… Not mentioning that for first year he was not giving single f about me. After 1.5 year company had restructuration, including changing the titles and I received title of Jr Manager (when my title should be specialist), but was told that this is only name change and no rise followed. And I was like “ok, company have issues, there is middle of pandemic, I will not make scenes”. Especially, that my bosses answer when someone was asking for the raise was “you have a job and full salary, this is your raise”. As well, with restructuration we received departmental Admin Assistant so part of my duties were shifted to this person. Nevertheless, it quickly came out that with amount of projects and daily work as well as additional duties that came because of covid it quickly came out that there is to much job for us and we have delays in few areas and this was already visible and noted during audits. Then we were first time promised additional person. It was I think June 2020.

Fast forward we got the admin, I passed part of my duties and dive into areas where we had backs to straight it up, took over projects and delegations and it became a lot. Then admin left. And they brought me back those duties while they were looking for new admin… For 6 months. Then new admin came, guy was heavily overqualified, but there. Nevertheless, in the meantime company secretary resigned, they did not found replacement for her so her job was split between departmental admins. Again, our admin had to much to do with Secretary duties, so he could to cover for the departmental ones, which again fall on me.

And then, shit started to going down in second quarter of 2022 when one of my colleagues filed his resignation. It was higher position that mine (full manager) in bit different area, but still I knew I was able to manage it. My boss agreed for the switch. This time, I wanted raise. And we started talking within department. Came out that our current admin assistant have higher salary than me… I was livid. It was not much, just few k annually before tax, but still. Why guy who just enter the company, 2 positions lower than me, have higher salary than me?! Ok, ok, I will straight it up during the talk with Managing Director about my new salary on new position. I send official e-mail asking about exact same salary that my leaving mate had, which btw, came out to be 153% of my current salary. Still before I got scheduled talk with MD, second of my team mates filled resignation, this time, with only 4 weeks notice as contract was not revised after her last promotion (worth to mention that it was year after the restructuration and neither of us received new contract or amendum to contract with new position name).

So I went on the talk with MD. He made blah blah and then gave me counter proposal for my new salary. This was only few k higher than our admin assistant and nearly 20k lower that mate from whom I was taking over. I was livid. And I lost it. I told MD that his proposal is ridiculous and he is not serious with this offer. I point out salaries of 2 other guys for compare and reminded him that if not me, they would not manage all delegations in last year and have no changes to manage this year, which we were legally obligated to made. That I was the only one by now who knew how made certain stuffs in the department and the company, and he should not be that brave with 40% resigning employees in 2021 in the company. At the end I stated that I will take the job with whatever salary they will give me but after 6 months in position, with my current experience and qualification as well as new experience, I will get another job in no time with salary that I want and I am worth to have. I was pissed, and visibly passive aggressive.

My boss came back from the holidays, had a talk with MD. And my boss came with new offer, still few k lower than my leaving mate, but already in the range of Manager salary so I was ok with it. Then, next of my team mates resigned (previous admin that suppose to be promoted to my previous position). And because he was still on probation period, he was gone within 2 weeks. At some point, I was doing admin job, my previous job, current job and still having frequent delegations. And I knew it will not change. They filled the gap of admin giving us company trainee, cool, but not what we need, second manager never came and there was no active interviews (job offer was pending since year by now). General atmosphere went from normal toxic to extreme toxic and with more and more open war between Heads of Departments (since the new one came), which was as well reflected in our daily job making it even harder. By now, I was pissed, frustrated, angry with number of open projects that I could not close cause those ass*oles were not able to effectively communicate and made a decision. And lets not forget, I was doing practically 4 jobs (admin assistant, previous position, current position and delegation position) for 1 salary. There was no light in this tunnel.

I applied for another job, in worldwide organization, for the position that was covering strong 20% of my current duties. And within 1 week I had new contract on my e-mail, with slightly better salary, more days of leave, permanent home office and few other benefits. I was 4th to file resignation within 4 months in 5 people department. When I filed my resignation I had another meeting with MD. He asked me why I did it if they gave me salary I wanted and really dicent raise. I looked him in the eyes and said that damage was done and he did gave me salary on the lvl of manager only because I made a fuss.

It's been 5 months since I filled my resignation and 2 since I left. There still did not hired anyone for any of the positions that I was holding and called me twice for information how to handle certain projects and on what stage they are. They are not even looking for replacement, just expect remaining workers to cover.

So guys, remember that you do not owe anything to the company and karma is a bi*ch.
