Family Member Terminated While On Company Short Term Disability

My mother who is almost 67 years old just received termination over the phone. She has been with her current company over 8 years and has had not one mark against her. All great performance reviews and not one day marked tardy. She had foot surgery 6 months ago and went on short term disability. She went on fmla and updated all parties on latest updates and provided doctor documentation. Doctor didn’t clear her after 6 months and shared she would need to be out until first of the year or longer still. Again, she pays her company for short term and long term disability if the needs arise. They fired her over the phone due to fmla being up. NO SEVERANCE. Is this a case for a settlement? Even in an at will state, you’re firing a 67 year old for a disability (she was on companies short term/long term plan) and offering no compensation.
