I'll keep it as short as possible but it'll be long, sorry for bad grammar/spelling/etc.
I worked at Applebee's (AB). It was a higher paying job in a small college town where I went to university. During my interview the GM and I worked out my schedule and priorities. I was very upfront that I was doing a 3 year double major and graduating the following semester, school was my number one priority, if at any point they attempted to make me choose this part time job over school I would quit without notice. The GM agreed and all was well.
The job was shit, two of the night managers were power hungry control freaks who constantly cussed employees out, went on weird power trips by making people stay 5 minutes later than they were scheduled. Sometimes it would be hours which was expected in a restaurant. I worked two 12's every weekend and made it clear I would not come in on weekdays. I am not an aggressive person but I will maintain boundaries, I had been cussed out and even had things thrown at me by management for either being too fast, or slowing down to much.
Well luckily the GM and regional manager liked me, I hit all their performance metrics and earned a few dollar or more raises in a very short 6 month period.
One Thursday I had a large group project due at midnight, our group had finished the project but was meeting at 9:30pm to finalize things and re check our analysis portion in case of errors. The general manager called me and asked me to take on a few hours that night and I wasn't horribly busy, so I told him I could do 5-9pm but I had to be out at exactly 9pm to meet with my group. They needed the help because the regional manager was going to be in and they needed a cover for a few hours for his inspection.
The night managers, Jared and Jake, agreed to these terms. I showed up, and around 7:30pm I asked if they wanted me to get some closing procedures done reminding him I had to be out by 9pm. Jared looked at me and said “not fucking likely”. I reminded him he agreed to the terms and could find somebody else if he needed someone after 9pm. Jake chimed in “I make the schedule and I think we need you after 9pm so you are staying”. I refused and started prepping some stuff to make sure the night crew could close on time. All the while they are arguing with me, Jared called me a spoiled piece of shit and Jake started telling everyone it was pointless of me to come in if I wasn't going to help close.
I made my case, stating that they agreed to my terms and I didn't need to come in, on top of that I go to school and have prior commitments. The regional manager chimed in on my side and told them they should listen to what I'm saying and take it seriously. They refused and he pulled them into the office. Jared walked out and went “you got me in trouble with my fucking boss”. I looked at him and told him “you did that”. At which point he dumped some food from the hot rack in front of me, then got sent home by the regional manager.
I finished the head start closing procedures and prep around 8:20 and started dishes. At which point Jake approached me and said “your out time is a suggestion and not a requirement for us to meet”. So I told him “if my out time is a suggestion then my in time is a suggestion and I'll show up as I please.”. He started screaming and cussing me out eventually saying “if you leave at 9pm you are fired. This is how it works and if you can't handle that you need to reconsider what industry you are in”. So I took my apron off and started leaving, he started freaking out and asked what I was doing, so I told him “I've reconsidered” and left.
The GM and regional called me the next day and asked me to stay on for a $2.00 raise, I refused citing my stance during our interview and they both gave me a letter of recommendation.
Not as insane as some of the stories on here but thank you if you made it this far.
TLDR; I got called into work and agreed to specific hours, two night managers tried to extend the hours and said I'd be fired if I stayed, so I left and the GM and regional managers took my side.
