Discovered THE most bizarre attendance policy. I [21F] started a full time job as a tech in a hospital about 2 months ago. I was called in for a yearly eval with my manager 2 weeks ago and during this meeting she informed me about their attendance policy point system where you get a warning/counseling after calling in sick 4 times and fired if you call in 2 more times after that. I have called in sick twice since I started (for the flu and a severe allergic reaction). But I let it go bc I really didn’t want to argue during my evaluation.
Fast forward to this week when I requested 2 weeks off in June to visit my family back home. Keep in mind, I have followed their policy of requesting >2 months in advance. My manager asks me to come in for another meeting and says “actually I got the attendance policy wrong, and bc you called in sick twice in your first 90 days of working here you get a final warning and if you call in again you’re fired.” Then, she says I don’t have enough PTO to cover 2 weeks of vacation and that PTO without pay is very difficult to get approved so she does not think it is likely that my request will be approved.
Honestly, the most ridiculous part of this whole thing is when I asked what I was supposed to do if I get sick again in the next month (kind of likely bc I work in a hospital with a lot of patient exposure!!!) and she said “to watch out and try not to get sick”. When I explained that I called in those 2 times for valid reasons and I can show proof of that, she said it doesn’t matter.
