Working in the auto industry sucks…

I quit my job working at an independent auto shop on Thursday. I thought it would be an easy transition to my new job, but man was I wrong. I showed up about 15 minutes before the tow truck did. The plan was to load my small tools into my car and then move my boxes to where the tow truck could easily pick them up. I had walked into the shop to start gathering my things when the service writer comes out and starts yelling at me that I’m no longer employed there and I’m not allowed in the shop. Things got kind of heated because I was arguing that they can’t keep me from my tools and I’ll get them, either by myself or with a police escort. I decided to walk away and when the tow truck driver showed up I had him go and remove my boxes from the shop. Afterward I went into the office to get my final check. The owner started yelling at me saying by quitting I put him in a terrible position. He said not only would he not give me my final pay check he was going to require me to pay back all of my sign on bonus. The thing is I never signed any contacts about having to repay the bonus. There where never any terms given or even a text message that gives terms. So not I have to spend my Saturday filling out forms for the labor board and contacting lawyers. I’m so sick of this industry acting like they own their technicians. I don’t owe my time to anyone and if I need to quit suddenly for a personal emergency then I will!
