Fired for needing surgery

Just needed to vent. My former employer was an asshole, but I had no idea how much of an asshole he was until recently. I worked for a self-proclaimed “education company” (really it was a retail store but my boss could get away with a bunch of shit by claiming we were teaching science with some of the cool products we had) and I honestly loved working there. We had a lot of cool stuff and most of my coworkers were the coolest people ever. I put in so much (unpaid) overtime and worked extremely hard because I believed we were doing good things for the community. Reality was that it was all a marketing scheme obviously. Anyways. I had been working there for about 2 years when I had an unfortunate accident and horribly broke my wrist (broke it in 3 different places!) and needed surgery. During the time…

I had been working there for about 2 years when I had an unfortunate accident and horribly broke my wrist (broke it in 3 different places!) and needed surgery. During the time leading up to the surgery and for the recovery time, I was advised by my doctor to not work or drive. I had enough money that I could make it by during the time so I let my boss know.
He was unhappy but kept his mouth shut because there wasn’t a thing I could do about it.
I want to preface by saying, I know damn well that I was one of his best employees. I was the first one to jump at new projects, took responsibility for a lot of the running in the company, and held various positions of authority and management for him. Prior to taking the time off, my boss assured me a job would be waiting for me and they couldn’t wait to get me back asap.
Well you can assume where I’m going with this. I get clearance from my surgeon to go back to work so I try to call my ex boss up to let him know. I was playing cat and mouse with him for weeks trying to get a time that he could speak to me on the phone. I finally get him to just text me of and all of a sudden, he has too many employees and he doesn’t need anyone else in the store right now.
I was pissed. But I knew they would flounder without me so I let it go. A few weeks later, there are job listings up on Indeed from him because he’s desperate. And since I still have access to certain company programs that monitor the success of his business, I can see that sales are declining and social media numbers are wrecked.
Im at a fairly good job now that is paying me more and let’s me work more reasonable hours so I’m just going to sit back and have a nice little laugh about it. 🙂
