Today I was fired from my federal job based in a regional office in the Twin Cities, MN, within my probation period, for “performance issues” with a timeline that began shortly after I was hospitalized for a mental health crisis (I have bipolar, and was hired under Schedule A). They say even though I was hired under disability status, I’m not given any protection – but the HR guy gave me a crumpled up piece of paper for where I can file a complaint. My psychiatrist saw me for an emergency appointment and is encouraging me to appeal so that I can hopefully remove the firing from my record and can quit instead. I’ve never been fired before, just laid off early in the pandemic – are appeals processes worth it? Am I fighting an uphill battle with the feds? I’ll be looking into unemployment but need special forms since I was a federal employee. Who do I even contact about all of this? Any advice is appreciated.
