I wanted a part time job that would be pretty chill and where I could talk to people (think a mix between retail and salon). It’s a very easy job that anyone could do, and while I have a degree and several years of experience in the professional world, this is not that. I knew I’d be working with young people and people who likely didn’t have a similar education to me. No problem for me but I definitely knew what I was signing up for as far as the duties of the job go (what I didn’t know is that communication about scheduling would be a nightmare). I applied for a position, interviewed and was hired pretty quickly. During my interview I emphasized multiple times that I was only looking for a part time job (2-3 days per week) and could only work very minimally for the first month due to personal obligations. I was sure to emphasize this and ask if that’s something they could work around. They said yes no problem, I show up for my first day of training where I’m told that I’ll be working 40 hours that week. I say nope that doesn’t work for me, they tell me who to text, I do that and hear nothing. I work 4 days and on the 4th day I tell them there’s no way I’m coming in the following day. They seemed shocked and had to scramble to figure out a solution and it turns into a big problem for several managers the day of who are doing unexpected coverage even though they had plenty of time.
Come to work the following week where I work my scheduled shifts. Then today I got a text from the manager saying they can’t work with my schedule and all of my requests off. I should reach out to them when I can work 25 hours per week. Weird because I clarified this with them before I was hired but whatever, this job was just a fun side gig that was causing me more stress anyways. I text them back saying okay, please just send me my check for the hours I did work. I’m also supposed to work in a few hours as a reminder so if you haven’t told that store manager yet you will probably want to reach out because I’m the only person scheduled. They immediately text me, call me, and have two other managers call me and text me that it was a mistake, they fired the wrong person (even though it was clearly me they were trying to fire due to the personal information they included in the text about my hours and requests off). One of them even said that I need to be there for my shift that day. I wait a bit because, excuse me what? Finally (45 min later) I get back to them and tell them I think their idea of waiting to work there until after my personal time off in about a month would be best. They ask me several times to work today and for my next scheduled shift. I said nope. Two managers even called me and begged me to work.
What is wrong with people?
