Fired with no notice – need help squeezing everything I can

Title is straightforward: I was fired yesterday morning with zero notice and without cause. In the meeting my manager said that it was because of a “shift in demeanour” and that “my heart wasn’t in it” – which is funny because he congratulated me on hitting over 125% of my target this month a few days ago. I was never outwardly expressive about how much I hated my job, but I’m sure I wasn’t the most chipper of the bunch either. What’s interesting is the official termination letter says it’s “not performance related, however the company has decided to go a different direction”. Regardless, they’ve offered me 1 month of base salary and oh-so-graciously the salary and commission I already earned (that I’m legally entitled to). I requested 2 months salary because the job market is not kind to young recent grads. HR told me the job market is “active”…

Regardless, they’ve offered me 1 month of base salary and oh-so-graciously the salary and commission I already earned (that I’m legally entitled to). I requested 2 months salary because the job market is not kind to young recent grads. HR told me the job market is “active” and I’ll be “just fine” – they say this headquartered in London, UK. I think I may have actually dropped the demand if they hadn’t made such an ignorant and uninformed comment. Who the hell are you to tell me what my local job market is like from 6,000km away?

Unfortunately, legally, I haven’t got much of a leg to stand on. 1 month is double what I’m owed by law and in my province you can be fired for any reason without notice so long as you’re paid. But I’m pissed about how they treated me, so I’m thinking of threatening to take them to court. I’ve got no real case, but responding to a legal challenge of any sort should cost them at minimum around $5k likely closer to $10k. Much more than the $3600 I’m asking for.

Anyone had any success with something like this? Any alternative ideas are also welcome. Maybe it’s a bit risky with court and legal fees, but maybe it’s worth it. Whatever I can do to hit ‘em where it hurts.
