Five years isn’t enough for a promotion?

Obvious throwaway, but I work in manufacturing and work with a lot of guys older than me. One guy has been working here for five years, yet doesn’t make as much as other coworkers who haven’t been here as long, and technically we both have the same title, despite him having four years of experience over me. We’ll call him G. G finally decided he wanted to talk to our manager, B. He went and talked to B and asked him if he could get a promotion in title alone, not asking for more money right now as we just got a raise. B told G that it wasn’t on the table as he didn’t want another supervisor, and that if he did promote someone from our side, he’d pick one of the guys who has been here for a few years, but is also the son of another manager.…

B told G that it wasn’t on the table as he didn’t want another supervisor, and that if he did promote someone from our side, he’d pick one of the guys who has been here for a few years, but is also the son of another manager. Now, G puts in a lot of time here between coming in on his off days and working extra hours, just to make sure stuff gets done. I think he should be a supervisor, but B clearly doesn’t care. B ended the conversation by saying that our section was the worst in terms of production, which is something we hear a lot, but the reason is because we don’t have have parts half the time we need to work, or they change shit all the time.

There’s a good bit of people here who are looking for jobs, but I know that G is now looking for a new job, seeing as he hasn’t been promoted once in his five years here and they clearly don’t have the upward growth they tout. Thankfully, I’m leaving this place soon enough myself.
