I've been a plumber gas fitter for 10+ years. Just moved to a new town and got a job with this company.
They went us to a condominium that's a heritage building (meaning it's over 100 years old) in the downtown Vancouver area. There is a problem that requires us to access it from the crawl space.
This area is maybe 20″ deep with one access door under the stairs with no ventilation. Being a union educated tradesman I know that access to these locations requires a special certificate called (confined space) and should never be entered alone.
So I tell the company that it's not something I can do since I'm not certified (NOTE: my comment has informed them of the qualification requirements and the danger)
The next day at our “daily safety meeting” which honestly is a joke the company owner Glenn asked for a around the applause for the apprentice that went into the crawl space and fix the problem, saying he is too modest to brag about it. Basically reinforcing the dangerous work practice attitude.
I was pissed so I brought up the danger and the certification and told him “My job is to make you money, your job is to insure our safety, why would you sent a 1st year apprentice into the crawl space?”
My comment was ignored.
Next day I'm asked to fix a broken copper line (required and acetylene tank) about 25' off the ground and was told to use plywood for support to crawl 10' on t-bars with just a ladder.
I asked for a boom lift and that was went I was let go for not being a team player. Oh I'm sorry official reason “Not meeting company needs”
Working in construction is in dangerous job make sure you know the rules and don't get hurt because the bosses in the company don't give a damn about you.
