Antiwork

For the past year and a half I’ve been working my dream job, sitting in a chair and playing video games for 8 hours. No its not streaming related.

I've never had ambitions for a career. As far back as I remember when anyone asked what do you wanna be when you grow up I never had an answer. I didn't wanna be anything. Call me lazy, I just dont think there is anything in this world that I would enjoy doing as a job, and there is definetely no job I'd be willing to go to uni for, waste several years and who knows how much money for. After school I had to work though, so I did. I worked as a waiter, then a barista . 7 years I did that, often pulling 16 hour shifts, dealing with incompetend and uncaring managers that subscribed to the philosophy of “No staff member is irriplacable”. I hated every minute of it. One night I was listening to Brandon Sanderson, an author, and he was talking about how he used…

One night I was listening to Brandon Sanderson, an author, and he was talking about how he used to write his books before he got published and could afford to sit at home and do it full time. He said he used to work the night shift at a hotel as a receptionist. Nobody would bother him cause there is barely anything to do, so he would just write his books.

The next day I went around town looking for non high-class hotels that needed a night shift guy and I found one right away. I got an interview and told the manager that I would be making much less money than I am now but I'd be willing to do it assuming he is ok with me bringing a laptop and playing video games or doing whatever. He is a chill guy and didn't mind.

My pay is average but I get by. There is no dress code so I come to work in my comfy clothes. Nobody bothers me. The last time I've seen the manager or any sort of boss figure was 7 months ago as they only come during the day. I do 5, 8 hour night shifts a week and my responsibilities are to just sit in a comfy chair and just be there. I don't know any of the day time drama. The other people at the hotel dont know anything about me. I barely see any customers cause they're asleep. I'm happy and stress free.

I could see myself doing this forever. There is no real point to this post other than to maybe let people know that this option might be available to you too. If I'd never heard it from Brandon I'd probably still be working in some shitty restaurant. Thank you Brandon.
