So, I work for a small company, and we worked from home during the first year of the pandemic completely. I was only working part-time, and the pay was ok (not the best, but could be worse) but I truly enjoyed just waking up and going to work and being able to step away and do laundry or cook during lunch. Everyone was nice and the work was not too demanding, but I was able to multitask a lot of things that needed to be done at home (dishes, laundry, cleaning, etc.)
In May 2021, I had gotten my degree and began working full time. There had been some talk of returning to the office before I had started full-time. So, on the first day of my full-time position, they had me in the office with a mask and stated that we would be in the office 5 days a week starting then. I had just signed a lease nearly 45 minutes away in a more rural area and was not the happiest when I heard this. While it was not the best news, I decided I would stick it out and suck it up even though we had to wear masks in the office for months.
Fast forward to March 2022, we had everyone in the office still and had hired a new intern. There had been a few red flags I had noticed but ignored (said some rude things to some other people in the office, my document being called “useless” because my boomer boss didn't find immediately what he was looking for, etc.) Other than that, things were going smoothly, and the work was getting done but the day would drag on because there is not 8 hours of things to do. Mostly wait on our team in India to report back on development and we respond and react to customers throughout the afternoon. One of my coworkers also did not have so much to do and he would play a game on his laptop during his downtime. My boss had mentioned to me when we came into the office “Checking Facebook or something like that doesn't matter. We don't care and don't expect you to work constantly”. While I thought this was nice, my coworker was berated publicly for utilizing a game to keep him occupied at work and called a “jerk” for not doing work. While I agree, don't game at work, at least be nice about it. He shortly quit after finding a new job (good for him). I was then expected to absorb all of his work until the “position is replaced”. Well, it's been 6 months and the only raise I have seen is due to an annual review and most of it was a COL adjustment with a minor 2% raise on top of that. Also, I'm still doing all of his work, it's not being absorbed by others at all and it's draining me and some of my free time (being expected to make calls to a different country at 8 PM local time). On top of that, on the first day after they left, I absorbed these responsibilities and spent the entire day learning the ropes, I was yelled at for something that is not entirely in my job description by a supervisor.
Fast forward to now, the intern has left for a job closer to him that pays more. The day after they left, the air conditioning did not work. Someone came into our office and said they were going to request a rent refund because it was so bad (almost 87 degrees Fahrenheit). We discussed how it was so hot when he left and I said, “the air is even thick”, to which my boss (the president of the company who is originally from India) looked me up and down at my desk and said “yes but you're wearing a synthetic cotton, not real cotton. Only the poor and lower class in India wear synthetic cotton. You should wear real cotton like this sweater I have today to keep the heat out”. It was 85 degrees with no airflow in the office and I was told that I dress like lower class.
The accountant who has worked here for 8 years has left for a remote job. Following this, we were allowed a single day a week to work from home. When I come into the office, I stare at a computer all day. No reason for me to be there. In fact, there isn't a physical item there that I need, I can make calls with my computer, have a desk at home, and a working internet connection at home.
Aside from this, all of my friends with similar degrees are paid nearly 10-15k more than I am and have better wfh conditions as well as better benefits. I'm just wondering if this is normal workplace behavior? or if I should trust my gut and leave this company as fast as I can? There is so much disorganization within the company and my bosses do very little work while passing it on to their subordinates, and continually making more and more work resulting in an unfair workload and set of expectations for us. This week I worked from 7 AM-6 PM for two to three days and I can't seem to get on top of the work while the president of the company is worried about checking the office's mail multiple times a day and taking naps in his car and then calling meetings randomly when he gets bored of checking yahoo finance.
So, I guess I am looking for confirmation that I should leave since this has been the behavior of the company for the last year and also looking for advice on how to score a better position that actually treats me well and makes me feel like I want to stay and do work at the company.
