Forced to take excessive call

I am a healthcare worker, I work in a special procedures department for a large healthcare system. We have to be on call for emergencies and trauma. It is not unusual to work 10+ hours shift one day then be called in in the middle of the night for a case that could be several hours, and then come back the following day for another 10+ hour shift. Like all hospitals we’re understaffed and are expected to take call a minimum of five days per week. Hospital refuses to hire any help. If someone has to take off we will take call every day. Work life balance is nonexistent. Is this legal? do we have any recourse?
