I was working a summer job in high school at a frozen yogurt shop and notified my manager that I would need a few days off to get my wisdom teeth out. This was not a very invasive surgery and people get it all the time so I thought that asking for two days off would be enough. After the first day, my body started to reject the painkillers I was taking and I was in some of the worst pain of my life. My face was swollen and bruised and I could barely talk. I contacted everyone on the staff asking if someone could fill my upcoming shift. No one was available. I called my manager in tears telling her I would need an extra day off. She told me that unless I could find someone to fill in that I would need to work. I ended up having to work the next day and it was hell. I was throwing up in the bathroom, could barely talk, and customers kept asking me if I was alright due to my swollen and bruised face. Mind you I was SIXTEEN and this was a FROZEN YOGURT SHOP. I didn't really realize the abuse that this was until recently and cannot believe that people think that treating any workers like this is acceptable.
