We both worked together at a semi popular restaurant in our city. Pretty good until it got bad. Many of the women there had multiple years of experience with coffee, and that does tie into this.
J overheard boss offering a man $10.50+ with very little to no experience at all. J got paid $10. W got paid $11 for an intense managerial role that took a toll on her mental health. After discussing with coworkers, she found out that the men were getting paid way more with some women getting paid as low as $9.75.
We even found out that new hires were getting paid at least $3-5 more than people that had been there for more than a year.
Come the next morning, she gets there early and is let go with no explanation. Crying to me in a voice message.
I’m pissed. In the past few days I’ve found out that someone else years before us was also let go for discussing wages.
We can’t really do anything but we know there’s nothing else that would have gotten her booted.
Sucks mostly and I needed to vent. Fuck a restaurant and fuck your hipster coffee bullshit.
