Fundraising for the antiwar and anti-Putin movement in Russia: strikes and direct action
Summary: Every protest needs a fund – striking workers and people on barricades have to eat, or they won’t be able to last long enough. Neither the big opposition in Russia, nor foreign governments have created such a fund. Thus we are attempting to do it ourselves – with your help. One by one we are small and insignificant, but together we can succeed. You have no reason to trust us, but we trust you. Let’s try?

Dear friends,
Let us introduce ourselves. We are members of the Russian antiwar movement. Some of you may already know us under the title of “Antivoenny_bolnichny” (“Antiwar sick-leave”). But for most of you, our real names are meaningless and empty – as they were and as they should be. As we have said in one of our first texts, we are not media personalities, not political scientists, and not a party cell. We are just people, some of the many. Just those who could not stay aside and had to act against the terrible war and the ruthless regime of the tyrant called Putin.
From the very beginning of this war, we saw many people against it. But most of them felt helpless and did not understand what can they do. Thus we started to spread the information about different methods of direct action. Mainly we were promoting the idea of strikes, sick-leaves (and so our name), and mild sabotage. And our calls resonated with thousands of hearts. We have heard so many voices of support both from within the country and from people abroad, from you.
However, no significant strike movement has developed – and we know the reason why. Even though many workers were ready to do it, the devastating economic crisis has left them living barely from hand to mouth, and they were too afraid of losing the last money they had. Of course, any strike needs a strike fund. It's clear for the foreign activists. But union movement in Russia has been suppressed for decades and is now in a saddening decay. We were hoping for some of the big opposition organizations to make such a fund, as they have the respect and the administrative capacity to manage it – and they have some money too. But, despite our calls, nothing like this has happened. Only two kinds of funds exist nowadays – those supporting emigration and paying fines to the police. None of those are necessary for the protest to grow, even though they help individual people.
We did not want to do it, as we – the group of nameless friends – do not deserve your trust. But we had to follow our rule – “do it yourself.” Thus, we are attempting to create a fund for different needs of the anti-war action – mainly for supporting those who are ready to strike. Why are we addressing you? Of course, some people in Russia are willing to donate too. But, again, they do not have enough money for it. Due to the rapid downfall of the national currency, it would not require much in euros or dollars to make this fund at least somehow significant. Thus, people from the West can help our movement while donating the barely noticeable (for them) amount of money. What is a couple of cups of Starbucks coffee for you is a salary for the whole day for many Russian workers.
We can receive donations in any convenient form – we have friends abroad – but as any transactions to Russia are blocked, the only way to transfer the money there is to use cryptocurrency. It complicates the issue a bit. But hope is everything we have.
Of course, it is not the priority nowadays. If you have only a few spare bucks to donate, you should give them to the brave people of Ukraine and to all those who have suffered – and who continue to suffer – from the Russian aggression. But if you have some leftovers and want to support our resistance – we promise not to waste your money in vain. Moreover, if we’ll see that we cannot use the funds fruitfully, we will donate the raised sums to the people of Ukraine. And none of it will go into our pockets – those pockets are already filled with leaflets, stickers, and cans of paint.
Some anti-war initiatives have agreed to become our recipients, so we’re going to act as fundraisers for them. We do not have enough people to manage the fund directly — though we will divide the money between those who need it for printing leaflets, nourishment during the strike, and everyday support if one gets fired for openly protesting. Maybe some workers should want to have a rest after the tiresome strikes. For example, spend some time outdoors and calmly have a beer. So they will also need money for gasoline, motor oil, and fine glass bottles 🙂
Our call may remain unheard, but our struggle will not end before the terrible bloodshed stops – and before the government pays for its crimes. However, if this idea resonates, we are grateful for your enforcement. Our hearts get warmer and braver with your support. We can feel that we stand together against evil. And shall overcome someday.

Ни крупная российская оппозиция, ни иностранные правительства не создали такого фонда. Поэтому мы пытаемся сделать это самостоятельно – с вашей помощью. Поодиночке мы слабы и незначительны, но вместе у нас может получиться. У вас нет причин доверять нам, но мы доверяем вам. Попробуем?

Дорогие друзья,
Позвольте нам представиться. Мы – члены российского антивоенного движения. Кому-то из вас мы уже знакомы под именем «Антивоенный больничный». Для большинства из вас наши имена пусты и бессмысленны – такими они были, такими они и останутся. Ведь, как мы сказали в одном из наших первых обращений, мы не СМИ, не политологи и не партийная ячейка. Мы – просто люди, одни из многих. Просто люди, которые не смогли остаться в стороне и стали бороться против ужасной войны и против бессердечного режима тирана по имени Путин.
С самого начала войны мы видим, что многие люди против нее. Но большинство из них чувствовали беспомощность и не знали, что можно сделать. Поэтому мы стали распространять информацию о различных способах прямого действия. В основном, мы продвигали идею забастовок, больничных (отсюда и название) и мягкого саботажа. И наши призывы отозвались в тысячах сердец, и мы услышали множество голосов поддержки как в своей стране, так и из-за рубежа: от вас.
И тем не менее, значительного развития забастовки не получили – и мы знаем, почему. Не смотря на то, что многие работники были готовы на это пойти, экономический кризис едва оставил им денег на еду, и они слишком боялись потерять последние средства и остаться голодными. Конечно, любой забастовке нужен стачечный фонд. Это очевидно для иностранных активистов, но профсоюзное движение в России подавлялось на протяжении десятилетий и находится сейчас в плачевном состоянии. Мы надеялись, что кто-то из крупных оппозиционных организаций создаст подобный фонд, так как у них было и уважение, и административный аппарат для управления фондом – а также денежные средства. Но, несмотря на наши призывы, этого не произошло. Сейчас существуют только два типа фондов – для поддержки эмигрантов и для оплаты штрафов за участие в митингах. Это не то, что нужно для роста антивоенного движения, хоть отдельным людям эти фонды и помогают.
Мы не хотели этого делать, ведь мы – группа безымянных друзей – не заслужили вашего доверия. Но нам придется последовать своему же принципу – «сделай сам». Таким образом, мы пытаемся организовать фонд на различные нужды антивоенного движения – в основном на поддержку тех, кто готов бастовать. Почему мы обращаемся к вам? Конечно, некоторые люди в России тоже готовы нас поддержать. Но, опять же, у них для этого недостаточно денег. Из-за быстрого падения курса рубля, для того, чтобы сделать наш фонд хоть сколько-то значимым, хватило бы совсем немного долларов или евро. Поэтому люди с Запада могут помочь нашему движения, при этом жертвуя едва заметное (для себя) количество средств. То, что для вас – две чашки кофе из Старбакса, для российского рабочего – зарплата за целый день.
Собрать мы можем в какой угодно удобной для всех форме – у нас есть друзья заграницей. Но перевод в Россию можно осуществить только с помощью криптовалют. Это все усложняет. Но надежда – все, что у нас есть.
Конечно, такой фонд не может сейчас быть приоритетным. Если у вас есть несколько лишних долларов на пожертвования, лучше их отдать смелому народу Украины и всем тем, кто пострадал – и продолжает страдать – от российской агрессии. Но если у вас осталось больше, и вы хотите поддержать наше сопротивление – мы вам обещаем, что эти деньги не будут потрачены зря. Более того, если мы увидим, что мы не можем применить эти средства с пользой, мы пожертвуем их людям Украины. И ничто из этого не пойдет в наши карманы – эти карманы уже заполнены листовками, стикерами и баллончиками краски.
Некоторые из антивоенных инициатив согласились быть нашими реципиентами, поэтому мы будем лишь собирать средства для них. У нас недостаточно людей для прямого управления фондом, но мы будем распределять деньги между теми, кому они нужны на печать листовок, на питание во время забастовки и на поддержку тех, кто лишился работы из-за своего открытого протеста. Возможно, кто-то из рабочих захочет отдохнуть после утомительной забастовки и поехать на рыбалку, посидеть на природе с пивом… А стало быть, им понадобятся деньги на бензин, машинное масло и бутылки 🙂
Наш призыв может остаться неуслышанным, но мы не прекратим бороться, пока это ужасное кровопролитие не остановится – и пока правительство не ответит за свои преступления. Как бы эта идея ни отозвалась, мы благодарны за вашу поддержку. Вы даете тепло и силу нашим сердцам. Мы чувствуем, что мы вместе стоим против зла, плечом к плечу. И вместе мы обязательно справимся.
