I was inspired to make a post after reading someone else's yesterday and commenting on it.
I've been with a company for a little over three years, and technically almost four if you count the time I worked as a temp before being brought on as an actual employee. The job is pretty easy, and they actually give a generous amount of PTO, but the pay isn't great, it's not horrible, but it's not great. It also seems like there just isn't really any room for advancement in my position. I had been keeping my options open and looking to see if I could find better paying work, and or work with more potential for advancement elsewhere, and recently interviewed and was offered a job that sounds almost exactly like what I'm currently doing, but for a pay increase of five dollars more per hour, plus a 50 dollar a week gas stipend since I'll have to use my car a little very little bit for work, also the commute is slightly shorter. The only downside, is it seems like my new job will come with a little less PTO, but that didn't seem like a good reason not to take it.
Anyways I accepted the job offer, and this past Monday, August the 8th gave my two weeks notice. I ended up having to do it though email, because part of my job entails sometimes covering at other sites in the area when people are out sick or on vacation, and it just so happened I was scheduled to be working at another site for my two weeks period, which means I won't be interacting with anyone who works for my company during this time. I sent the email to my boss, as well as the site supervisor where I normally work, and did not get a reply from either of them. However, the next day I got a call from a woman in HR who wanted to find out more about why I was leaving. I explained that I was offered a similar position for more money so I decided to take it, and that it was nothing personal. She asked if there was anything they could do to keep me on board, so I said match the offer and I would consider it. She said she'd see what she could do, and get back to me. Well, that was Tuesday the 9th, and it's now the start of the day on Thursday the 18th, I've only got two days left with my current job, and haven't heard a thing from anyone.
I honestly never expected them to match the offer, but I was interested in seeing how desperate they were to keep me on. The area I'm working in has been somewhat short staffed for the past few months, and I'm the only one who's trained to cover at all the sites in the area, so you would think it would be in their best interest to keep me on since sooner or later they'll need coverage, but I really doubt they would match what I'll be getting at my new job. They just strike me as a somewhat cheap company, which is really my only major complaint with them.
I guess I'm not sure why I'm sharing this post, other than I just find the situation somewhat amusing, and I wanted to see to what lengths they would go to keep me on, but it seems like they're not even going to bother at this point. I wouldn't accept a counteroffer less than what my new job will give me, but had they offered to at least match I would have seriously considered staying on since I am comfortable in the job, and the PTO is better. Oh well, I guess I'll see what awaits me at my new job, but I suspect the higher pay, as well as shaking things up to see what sort of potential future I can created for myself there will make the move worth it.
