I work as a data scientist. I won’t say the organization, but it is one that I respect and don’t want to be damaged (it’s not a corporation)… however higher management had blown literally hundreds of millions over budget on projects that will have no benefit to the public, including arbitrary dictates for seating during return to work—the dictate would have cost hundreds of thousands to develop and is completely pointless given that people will naturally sit with people they collaborate with regularly…. I am being laid off so higher management can pander to conservative politicians and appear to be ruthless like a business, even though the layoffs are clearly less than 5% of the excess expenditures. There is zero accountability and the higher management folks are even getting promotions. All of this should be public, but it will never be. I am fucked since there are virtually no jobs in the field in my country relative to the number of applicants. I will be on unemployment insurance for months and won’t be able to afford my medication. But this doesn’t matter…. Just as long as corporate-orientated folks protect themselves and avoid the organization being damned by conservative representatives .
