Getting paid less than coworker doing the same job

Hi everyone, sorry if this is not the right sub. If it’s not, please let me know where I can direct this question to. I just started a new job and it’s my first role in a tech company. I have previous work experience but not necessarily in the role I got hired for. Hi everyone, sorry if this is not the right sub. If it’s not, please let me know where I can direct this question to.

I just started a new job and it’s my first role in a tech company. I have previous work experience but not necessarily in the role I got hired for.

I (F) got hired at the same time as a male coworker who is said to have previous experience in the role we were hired for. I found out he is getting paid 5K more than I am.

I am conflicted. Is this normal, for him to be paid more since he technically has some experience in the field? But we have been doing the exact same job all month, are expected to do the same projects and have the same responsibilities. I feel that I should be compensated the same if we are doing the same job.

I’d understand if he was hired for a higher role and has more responsibilities. If I should be paid the same, how do I approach and ask for a compensation adjustment?
