Getting rewarded with food instead of money

So, last week where I worked on was “employee appreciation week”. Meaning, the managers would just cook food for us for one day while we work. They have done this for a couple times for us for the several months I worked there and to me, it doesn’t make much sense. Many of us had already brought food and I’m sure many of us would prefer a little extra in our next paid check. To add insult to injury, a lot of us this week are scheduled to come in to hours early and are part time. So 10 hours for a day with no overtime. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but I figured if a company wants to show appreciation to their workers, just give them an extra $50 on their paid check or a paid day off.
