Pretty messed up situation has recently gone down at my current job of 6 years. As of two weeks ago, I handled all marketing and associate product management for my group. We were blindsided by upper management, who indicated that a major re-org was to take place and that certain members would be realigned elsewhere. I ended up being one of those members.
In the last two weeks I’ve continued to handle not only my current projects and responsibilities, but have been contacted multiple times by management in the “new team” to discuss my new role, etc. and go over major marketing strategies, resources, brand positioning and other fun stuff. Getting a funny feeling that things were about to ramp up, I reached out to the person who would be my new manager and indicated I wanted to have my current title reviewed. With little to no hesitation they agreed to change my title to that of marketing manager. Ok cool. But wait, there’s more…
Well, since then, there has been no mention of commensurate compensation, no reassignment of current projects within my old team, and old team management has been giving me only radio silence. They will be losing a major resource and just don’t seem to give a shit. It’s shocking.
On top of all the other chaos, the person who was to be my new colleague, decided to put in their resignation last week, leaving the new team management scrambling to find a replacement, and to capture knowledge on very complicated processes. It feels very much like a complete shitshow at this juncture.
Pretty much having had my fill of all the secretive and vague bullshit today, I reached out to the director of my soon-to-be “old” team and voiced my concerns regarding lack of transparency between both divisions, complete lack of any meaningful communication, and said that I felt pretty much disrespected and devalued by the whole process. He agreed and said he was going to try and work something out to try and retain me. I appreciated the gesture but felt there was very little left to work out.
I also fired off a thoughtful but firm request to have my current compensation reviewed and adjusted commensurate to the new title, and requested that the result be provided in a formal offer letter. It seems ridiculous that even though I’m feeling like a pawn in all of this, I’m the one having to engage management on both sides and get something meaningful and constructive going in terms of dialogue. Is this just the way it is anymore? If so, I’m seriously ready to pack it in and just sell produce at a roadside stand or something. At the end of the day, all this chaos barely seems worth the paycheck. Try to wedge me into a more difficult role without mention of being properly compensated? For a multi-billion dollar Fortune 500 company, they should be embarrassed of themselves.
