I’m in the UK (probably tell that by the name) I have 11 years of sales experience mainly in business development and field sales.
I was made redundant Christmas Eve 2021.
I found a job on indeed that a recruiter was advertising. Business development executive £25 to £30k a year, selling via phone email and occasionally visiting clients. Great! Sounds right up my street!
At interview I stated I’m looking for £26 to £28k.
I get offered the job, the recruiter said they are willing to offer £25k. Okay, I asked for the very least £26k could you go back to them and counter offer that. The recruiter goes back and the response…..we can’t offer more than £25k as it would upset the office environment….. okay, so why advertise at that top end of £30k
I accept the £25k. I have a young family and we can’t live as a single wage household.
I turn up for my first day. I walk in to a warm welcome and see a bunch of guys sitting with headsets on…I get that sinking horrible gut feeling. This is a fucking telesales job!!
I smile and go through the mentions until I get the chance to talk to some of the guys.
I ask “so how much do you guys go out, meet clients and sell?” The response “err we never do, it’s all done on the phone.”
The manger comes in, I get passed a contract.
On the contract, plain as day.. job title: Sales executive.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a snob! I’ve been in sales 11 years, I’m past my telephone sales/sale executive days and know my skill set!
I’m sick to the back teeth of recruiters that lie and over sell jobs. If I lie while selling a product financial body’s can come down on my fucking hard! But if a recruiter miss sells me a job I’m just expected to suck it up!
I know in some states in the US miss selling jobs is illegal but here in the UK we have nothing like that.
I just needed to vent as I’m now back a square one without a job and debts stacking up!
