Got called into the office for “coming in late”. Long vent.

My job is at the local delicatessen shop, a 1 minute walk from my house. It’s perfect for me as it’s not crazy hard work, I make pretry good money for my age and it’s super close. I also get paid in cash (under a 0-hour contract; I’m under company coverage, but pay no taxes of my own—little loophole.). We’re a team of 10 including the owner, who basically does exactly the same work as we do, but is also the owner. We open everyday at 8 am & whoever has keys, usually comes in at 7.15-7.30 to prepare. I work the full day shift on Saturdays, 8 to 5, after which we clean for about 20-30 minutes, which is unpaid but we get a drink of choice & cannoli, so I don’t really mind that I don’t get money. Now, I work all day and even though I’m used…

We’re a team of 10 including the owner, who basically does exactly the same work as we do, but is also the owner. Now, I work all day and even though I’m used to it, it’s still tiring. I could definitely come in way earlier because I live pretty close, but I don’t want to as I’m not paid for that time & I already spent 20-30 minutes extra unpaid. I usually leave at 7.55 and arrive, well, at 7.56. I am NEVER late and start working when the clock hits 8.

Now, a few weeks ago, we’re cleaning up and after we’re done, I obviously go to take my cash, and he sits me down and tells me that I need to start coming in earlier. I’m super confused because I’m always on time and never overtime breaks, I’m a good employee, especially compared to 2 ex-coworkers.
He tells me that, that morning I came in when there were customers in the store. In reality, I came in at 7.56, when another business owner from our street was let in earlier by my boss to pick up an order of ham. I tell him this, in nice words, but he tells me it would be perfect that I could come in 5-10 minutes earlier. I don’t know what to say anymore and just leave.

I obviously don’t come in any earlier and he recently made 1 offhand comment about me being “so almost too late”. I’m super confused and kind of angry because I already put up with 30 minutes of unpaid work and have a PERFECT record, even the 2 others with keys have come in late sometimes, not me.

There isn’t really anything to say anymore but ugh, just needed to share this somewhere else than my friends & mom. It’s just bullshit.
