I work at a corporate restaurant chain and have been in the food service business since I was fifteen years old. I work in Denver as a line cook and have been in talks to get promoted to a key hourly management position. I was told the other day to “come up with a number you'd like to work towards hourly” so I talked to the other person who is in the role they are trying to put me in and asked how much they make hourly. When I sat down yesterday with the general manager and the executive chef I told them I would like to work towards what you are paying the other key hourly manager. I was then lectured on how “it's tacky to talk about money. I would never even ask my parents how much they make.” And then was counter offered with a pay rate of seven dollars less an hour than the other key manager. So when it comes down to it they are offering me a two dollar raise for triple the responsibility. What do you all think I should do?
