I got fired yesterday for taking a sick day last week.
I worked for a startup in the automotive industry, and anyone looking through my old posts will know I considered leaving this company already. I gave them my resignation weeks ago, and they convinced me to stay. We began the hiring process to get me some much needed relief, way too late. I had asked for this relief in December so I could train someone up for this month so I can visit my niece for her first birthday. We talked about it, and nothing happened, and I brought this up the entire time I was there after this point.
My resignation notice seemed to get them in gear. They needed me, they wanted me to stay, and I was actively getting what I wanted. Thats why I stayed.
Last week I got the flu. I worked from home Monday and Tuesday, asked and was granted a sick day on Wednesday, and then continued to Work From Home Thursday and Friday. On my sick day on Wednesday, I was called and asked about training. What may be related – and I may make a post about this in the future but for now I'll keep this brief – is that this client belonged to the sales rep who absolutely hated me. Im a trans woman and up until recently didn't really pass. She always made off the cuff remarks about my appearance, or about a political issue she knew I wouldn't agree with, seeming to try and piss me off. Shes hated me since I reported her but that company kept her.
Back on point, customer called in, asked for training, and I said I'm sorry, I'm out sick and unavailable right now, may I please refer you to your Sales Rep, she'll be able to help you.
Yesterday I got pulled into my office and told that said customer was upset he didn't get the service he was used to getting. They told me they would accept my resignation, effective immediately, and then paid me my severance.
I've contacted a lawyer, but I need to ask the obvious. Do I even have a case here?
