This happened a couple days ago and I need to preface this by saying my current team is the best I've worked with in my entire 30yr career. I can't praise corporate for giving us just bonuses when they're making record profits (COVID and PPP loans have been really good for the bottom line).
Now that's out of the way: I was driving to pick up my kids from school and the line of cars ahead was slowing down for a yellow light. Next thing I know I see a white GMC looming large behind the car immediately behind me. SCREECH!! BANG. BANG.
So it's a 3 car crash. First reaction was to call 911. Second reaction was to call one of the kids and let them know what happened and I'll be there when I can. Third reaction was to call my manager.
Call to manager went to voicemail so I ignore that, start snapping pics, and giving my statement to the officers present.
After that I turn on the work profile on my phone and message my manager.
“Sorry to hear about that but when can you be back online? Client X is chomping at the bit and they need to go to Production”
Me: “I'm sorry but I don't know. I'm still waiting on a police report”
Manager: “Oh, so you're still at the scene. I thought you were home. Do you have an ETA?”
Me: “Sorry for being curt but I was just rear-ended. I don't have an ETA”
Manager: “I hope everyone is fine but Client X needs help and we are stretched thin”
That's when I thought “yeah, fuckit” and just told the team I'll be out the next day to take care of estimates, doctor appt (hurt my wrist), etc.
Like I said at the beginning, I like this team. I like my manager. But we had just received an email about how the company values work-life balance and they're moving to discretionary PTO for “when the unexpected arises”.
TLDR: got rear-ended and in a 3 car wreck, manager's first question is when I can get back online and back to work.
Other than a sore/sprained wrist, I'm fine
