Government employer who shall remain nameless found out our department was working X schedules & issued letters of investigation naming us as “targets” in a time fraud investigation as we were “shorting the organization work hours” & “falsifying time cards”.
We were working X schedules because we are salaried & often work extra hours & off schedule days due to the nature of our work. The theory was that it all broke even; our whole dept took the good with the bad & embraced it.
Organization decides to enforce a new dept schedule which forces us into losing a day off, but still having to do all the extra work, and for no extra compensation. It was effectively a pay cut. Schedule is still 4 10's & is good, but not as good as it was. No one was fired or forced to resign fortunately as they recognized we were all following what we believed to be a legitimate dept policy.
Employees & dept mgmt conduct research & determine based on FLSA duties tests we're likely not legally allowed to be salaried. Dept mgmt files w/ organization to revoke/remove FLSA status. Rumor is organization is fighting the removal of the FLSA status & advising if we do get it revoked & go hourly everyone is likely to get a pay cut. Part of their reasoning is that our union says it would be unfair to mix hourly & salary positions under the same contracts.
I honestly love my job, but feel like our organization does not value or understand our department. It makes me so frustrated. I also feel like our union is useless.
