Guess I’m not worth 15 Dollars…..

For the past year I have worked at a local Inn as the only housekeeper. I’m a 1099 and paid as an independent contractor. It was advertised as part time job 11-3 but it evolved into much more than that. Not only was I the only housekeeper I would also manage when they were gone for extended periods of time. On this particular day I had 4 rooms to turn on the property and with that I am also responsible for the laundry. I get paid 5 dollars for the room’s laundry and a set amount per room. These 4 rooms produced 7 loads of laundry. I worked to get all rooms and laundry done. I whittled the laundry down to one load in the washer and one in the dryer and I was all set to go home for the day. I informed my boss of the status of the laundry and wished them a good day. She told me I couldn’t leave until it was all dried. Now in the past they told me they would help with laundry- switch loads for me to finish the next day. I had asked earlier in the day to use the other washer and dryer they have on site and she told me no. So I waited an hour for the dryer to ding and put the final load in the washer. When I sent her my time card for that week’s pay, I added in the one hour for waiting on the laundry and charged my hourly rate of 15 dollars. Within minutes of texting my time card to her, my phone was ringing and a text to call her right away was sent. It was the fastest response I had ever gotten. In the past I’d wait days for my pay and would be forced to remind her about it. So when I called back her husband answered -asked me why I was charging 15$ for the laundry when he pays me 5$ and informed me that they would be hiring a laundry service and I won’t have to worry about the laundry at all. I told them they should probably look for a new housekeeper if they didn’t think my time was worth 15$ and he said maybe they should. So that’s how I lost my housekeeper position and it really opened my eyes to how I was asked to do more and more each day, without being compensated. It was in this moment I stood up for myself to let them know I wanted paid for my time. They did not like this.
